We have spent this series building a secure, organized, and resilient “Identity City” on our local servers. But in the modern world, your city doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Your citizens need to access tools in the sky—like Microsoft 365, Teams, and the vast resources of the cloud.
The final step in our journey is building The Bridge. In the Microsoft world, this means connecting your local Active Directory to Microsoft Entra ID (formerly known as Azure AD).
Why Build a Bridge?
In the old days, if a company wanted to use cloud tools, employees often had to remember two different passwords: one for their office computer and one for the cloud. This is a recipe for “password fatigue” and security leaks.
By building a bridge (using a tool called Microsoft Entra Connect), we synchronize your local “City Hall” with the cloud.
The result? One Identity. When Binod Maharjan changes his password in the local office, the bridge instantly carries that change to the cloud. John uses one set of keys for everything. This is called Hybrid Identity.
How the Sync Works
Think of the Bridge as a high-speed courier service.
- It looks at your local “Digital Citizens” (Users and Groups).
- It makes a secure copy of their identity information.
- It “pastes” that information into the Microsoft Cloud.
It doesn’t move your actual server to the cloud; it simply makes sure the Cloud knows who your people are and what they are allowed to do.
The Ultimate Goal: Seamless Resilience
The true power of the Bridge is that it allows your city to stay “Active” even if your local office has a power outage. Because your identities are synced to the cloud, your employees can still log into their email or join a Teams meeting from their home Wi-Fi using the same corporate credentials.
The Bridge turns your local city into a Global Enterprise.
The Architect’s Reflection
In our journey of self-improvement, we often feel torn between our “Roots” (our history and traditions) and our “Ambition” (our future goals). We think we have to choose one or the other.
But the most resilient people are Hybrid. They keep their feet firmly planted in their foundations while reaching for the sky.
Building a Bridge in Active Directory is a technical metaphor for this balance. We aren’t abandoning our local “City Hall”; we are simply extending its reach. A “Mindful Architect” doesn’t fear change—they build the infrastructure to support it. By connecting your foundation to the cloud, you are ensuring that your work—and your identity—can survive and thrive anywhere.
Congratulations! You’ve Completed the Identity Foundations Series.
From the first brick of City Hall to the global bridge of the Cloud, you now have a roadmap for a resilient digital world.
What’s your next journey? Now that your identity foundation is solid, are you ready to explore Exchange, Security, or the deep waters of Azure? Let me know in the comments what series you want to see next!
